Tree trunk furniture: unusual designer lamps by Duncan Meerding
Tree trunk furniture by blind designer Duncan Meerding
Enthusiastic about the work of the blind furniture designer Duncan Meerding, we would like to tell you something more about him and his fancy lights.
A few words about the designer
Duncan Meerding is a furniture and lighting designer based in Hobart, Tasmania.
Inspired by the beauty of nature, he works primarily with wood and other natural materials. He creates everyday objects with simple organic shapes, including his unique tree trunk lights. Exactly these have recently gained great popularity. That’s probably because tree trunk furniture is totally trendy, but not only because of that. The furniture of Duncan Meerding is a bit different as he is almost 100% blind. His eyesight is limited to 5% and he only uses his peripheral vision. So working with light helps Meerding express his own world perception.

From his love for wood, these unusual floor lamps have emerged. Meerding has used the natural cracks in the tree trunk and so the tree trunks have by no means lost their authentic structure. On the contrary, they look as natural as possible and have got a new practical function – the lighting function. The simple tree trunks have turned the designer into unique luminous objects. These can be simply great in a rustic decor, are great eye-catchers in every living room and can also be used as garden lighting.
