The role of the pool tiles in the pool design initially limited itself to the edge of the pool, but over time, the tiles found an ever greater application when pooling. The 1950s quadrangular pool design gradually evolved into various complex and high-tech pool concepts, so the pool tiles were becoming increasingly popular. Tiles prove to be an essential element in pool construction as they could add a modern look to your new pool, as well as adding to its fancy or vintage look. Anyway, these serve as an eye-catcher and transform the pool into a total eye-catcher!
However, each tile type has its own peculiarities, so you have to thoroughly inform yourself about the respective advantages and disadvantages. If you prefer, for example, ceramic tiles, they should then be specially made for outdoor use. Otherwise, they will break and break because of the fairly low temperatures in winter and the chemical substances dissolved in the water.
What should the pool tiles look like?
The tiles at the edge of the pool were initially colored in different shades of water blue and therefore served as a visual natural extension of the water. Thanks to their rich ornamentation and colorful motifs, Spanish-style pool tiles became more and more important in the 60’s. Gradually, the big tiles were 6 × 6 cm. replaced by smaller mosaic tiles. However, due to this newly introduced trend, the amount of mortar required tripled – the drying time rose dramatically, the small tiles disintegrated during laying and should be replaced with new ones over and over again.

The dark green and cobalt blue ceramic tiles that appeared on the market in the 1980s proved to be more practical and stylish, because they produced one sparkling effect in the interplay of water and sunshine. A few years later, the white pool tiles were used. As these had a pretty strong contrast to the usual dark pool floor and much more often needed a special cleaning, they were displaced by the blue tiles again. Today, neutral and stone-like tiles are becoming more and more in the focus of the experts, as they are well-versed in the different pool designs and can be maintained much more effortlessly. Glass tiles and beige ceramic tiles are two other popular variants that have been enjoying increasing interest in recent years.
- ◊Extra Tip: According to the experts, it is best to opt for glass tiles! As these reflect the elegant movements of the water, they create an iridescent effect by breaking the sunlight in the water. In addition, these can be colored in various bright colors and play the passionate dance of the water in a unique way. The glass can be used equally well in warm and mild climates as well as in bad weather conditions.
