To experience the Carnival in Venice? Yes, it is definitely one of the most famous and popular carnivals in the world and you should see it at least once in a lifetime. Immerse yourself in an unforgettable, mystical atmosphere, steeped in romantic nostalgia and sensual moments. Carnival in Venice can by no means compare to this one in this country. He has nothing to do with the wild joie de vivre of the parades in Rio. No, he has his own special magic that comes from times long past. You just feel it in the air.
Carnival in Venice – an incomparable experience
The centuries-old Carnival tradition in Venice dates back at least to the 11th century. At that time, the Maritime Republic of Venice was already slowly beginning its economic ascent. The rich princely courts created the conditions for the annual celebrations. Slowly it became a popular custom, about two weeks before Ash Wednesday, to wear masks and really hit the wall. And although the carnival was neglected for a while at the end of the 18th century, it is celebrated again today, with body and soul. A large number of tourists come to Venice every year in late January / early February to become part of the fairytale events.
Fabulous parades with gondolas
Also this year 2016 the actual Carnival in Venice starts much earlier than in Germany. Already on the 23rd of January, the festive processions with richly decorated gondolas start on the Rio di Cannaregio and offer visitors unparalleled views. A week later, on Saturday, January 30th, the theatrical performances begin at the Gran Teatro in Piazza San Marco, where the famous Festa delle Marie takes place. These are the 12 girls in the most beautiful Renaissance costumes presented to the public.
The official opening of the carnival every year is actually the so-called angel flight (Volo di Angelo) from the Campanile di San Marco. Secured with steel wire, an artist hovers over the crowd on St. Mark’s Square. The highlight of the carnival is undoubtedly the parade on Sunday before Ash Wednesday, this year on February 7 and of course the award for the most beautiful costume.
Masks and costumes are always considered works of art here
The costumes are always admirable in Venice. Precious jewelry and fine fabrics, veils and sequins – just a dream. It is therefore no wonder that the prices for such a carnival costume are really high. But if you go to Venice for the carnival, get at least a pretty mask, for example on maskenzauber.com. There you will find a great selection of different models at relatively low prices.
Now only a good last minute flight to find and of course a comfortable hotel or hostel in Venice and nothing stands in the way to immerse yourself in the unique carnival atmosphere. We wish you a lot of fun and an unforgettable time in one of the most romantic cities in the world.
